Leonie Barnett was our Speaker for our March meeting. Leonie gave a talk based on her life in Leicester as the only girl in a family of boys. As a female born in 1944, she was not expected to achieve much. In her own words, she endured “a pretty miserable childhood” often being left alone in the evening when her mother, evidently quite a character, visited the local pub. A clever girl, she left school at 14, to work full time in a hosiery factory – a mind numbing, soul-destroying job. She later did an OU course which opened the door to a more fulfilling life. She wrote a book titled (as was her talk) “I had it in me”, short passages from which were woven into her talk.
She spoke movingly about one of her brothers, Joe Orton, who became a famous playwright and a member of RADA. Tragically Leonie first learned of his death from a BBC News Bulletin.
Members were asked to bring items for a Bring and Buy stall and Cakes for a fund raising event at Northrepps Village Hall on April 22nd. This is one of a number of events to raise funds to re-roof Northrepps Church.
Arrangements are well underway for a coach trip to Sandringham House, gardens and museum in June, but before then, one April morning an `army` of WI folk will be doing a Beach Clean. Other members of the public are expected to join us.
